PREAMBLE

With this blog, I want to show my process as much as possible.  So I’ll be posting lots of rough work along with the final pieces.  I’m going to put up my prototypes and rough sketches and try to talk about the problems I have, and how I fixed them.  If you’re curious about something I haven’t covered, leave a comment and I’ll explain further.  I love it when people do breakdowns of their work, it helps me learn.  That’s the idea here.

ABOUT ME

My name is Finlay Paterson and I’m an animator.  I was born in Toronto, but I grew up in the suburbs.  I’m currently living back in toronto while at school. I am a fourth year student at the Ontario College of Art & Design studying integrated media. I began animating in 2005 and never really stopped.  I’ve worked and done freelance in much of the design sphere including illustration, print, graphics, video, web design and printmaking, but always come back to animation.  When I was in highschool I made a short titled Batteries for a Better Tomorrow which won the province-wide Marion Drysdale award. This was a pivotal moment for me, after which I began branching out and learning as diverse a tool-set as I could.  Eventually satisfying my curious mind with the discovery of 3D animation, and it’s dominion over my free time.

Since my introduction to 3D animation I’ve worked in commercial animation, architectural rendering, conceptualization and interactive content. I’ve also begun tutoring at OCAD for the Center for Students with Disabilities in basic computer use as well as animation and video.  At present my personal work is focused on character animation, digital compositing and live-action filmmaking. I am currently in preproduction on my thesis work, a live action short film called ORBIT. After this I will resume work on my short animated film Isaac & Isabelle, which has been well documented in the blog section of the site.
